This is the first of Ixalan’s “story spotlight” cards (you can tell from the Magic watermark in the text box). Yep, that’s Jace being forced back onto the plane of Ixalan by a myst erious spell known as Ixalan's Binding which prevents all planeswalking. However when he involuntarily tries to planeswalk on Ixalan, it doesn’t work out well. If you’ve played much Magic at all, you’ll probably know that Jace is a planeswalker, with powers of illusion and able to travel through the planes of the Multiverse at will. Our story starts here on the plane of Ixalan, with a lost and confused man called Jace.Īs we can see from this artwork (featured on one of Ixalan’s basic Islands), Jace wakes up on a deserted island with no memory of his past life. Today I’m going to be summarising one of the core underlying components of Magic: The Gathering the lore. Whether you’re a fan of complex rules or an art aficionado or a budding psychologist, there’s something to be found for everyone. ![]() But dig a little deeper and it’s easy to find the complexity and depth that makes Magic one of the best games in the world. Most visibly there’s the traditional physical card game we all know and love. Piloting a Mardu Pyromancer deck, Thompson's cards gave him some game against Salvatto's Ensnaring Bridge, but in the end, the Argentinian mainstay assembled his deck's powerful lock quickly and efficiently, closing Thompson out of three fast games.Īfter closing out his best year in the 2016-17 season but falling just a few matches short of some stretch goals, Salvatto's win got him all those missed targets, and has ensured his spot in the 2018 Magic: The Gathering World Championship, where he will be able to battle among the world's best for the very first time.įrom humble beginnings and a 2015 Super Sunday Series Championship victory, Salvatto's hard work and dedication led to a weekend that will be long memorable.Magic: The Gathering is a game with a thousand faces. His path ultimately led him to a final match against Pro Tour Amonkhet Champion Gerry Thompson of MetaGame Gurus Sun. Both matches were tight, with Salvatto getting through each round in five games. From there, he had to take down Jean-Emmanuel Depraz's Traverse Shadow in the quarterfinals, and then four-time Pro Tour Top 8 competitor Ken Yukuhiro of team Musashi in the semifinals. Salvatto has been a mainstay on the Pro Tour for the last two years, turning one memorable Top 8 at Pro Tour Shadows over Innistrad into a string of qualifications that ultimately led him to this day. Lighting the way to victory with the powerful Lantern Control deck, named after its namesake card Lantern of Insight, Salvatto battled through eighteen rounds and multiple difficult opponents to win $50,000 and the title of Pro Tour Rivals of Ixalan Champion. Three days, 465 players, and one very diverse Modern field is a difficult path for any player to navigate toward the title of Pro Tour winner, but Argentina's Luis Salvatto of Hareruya Latin did not hesitate.
